Personal Development

The Toynbee School, in partnership with parents, has a vital role in preparing children and young people to negotiate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly complex world. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks.

Our aim at Toynbee is to give our pupils the best opportunities so that they leave school equipped with all the tools they need to be successful beyond school. We aim to achieve this through the delivery of high-quality lessons to strive for academic excellence and by developing our pupils’ understanding of how to thrive in modern Britain. We want all our pupils to be respectful members of society who understand how to live safe, healthy lives.

Along with the teaching of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education, including Relationship and Sex education, we have a responsibility to help our pupils understand the British Values of society and immerse them in an SMSC education (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) along with preparing them for life beyond school with a robust Careers programme.  As a school, we operate a whole school approach to Personal Development and some appropriate topics are explored through the Pastoral Curriculum through tutor time and assembly.

Our ethos and vision at Toynbee is to push all pupils to achieve their Personal Best by developing the whole child. We have 5 core values which we push through all aspects of our Personal Development curriculum to help our pupils achieve their Personal Best. These are:

We recognise pupils’ achievements in these areas by awarding PROUD points which contribute to the House System, enabling all pupils to work together as a community. We truly believe that developing the whole child goes beyond the Academic and Pastoral Curriculum and we strive to give our pupils as many opportunities to develop their skills and experiences as possible. There are numerous Pupil Leadership opportunities for pupils from year 7 through to Year 11 and a variety of extra-curricular activities and educational visits both local, national and abroad.
